Latvian photographer Philippe Halsman 1906-1979, renowned for his vibrant portraits of celebrities, intellectuals, and politicians. From the 1940's to 1970's Halsman's work appeared on the covers and pages of contemporary magazines, including Look, Esquire, Life, the Saturday Evening Post, and Paris Match.

In his 1961 book titled "Halsman on the Creation of Photographic Ideas" he discusses ways for photographers to produce unusual pieces of work by following six rules.  See wikipedia for more detail.
